FaceBook

Today I thought I would share my Facebook page links with you.  If you like my blog, I hope you like my face book pages too!

The first is linked directly to my Early Language Skills and Play blog.  The second is linked to my creations page - Sarah's Creations.  It is a dream of mine to one day have a small business making and selling educational toys for children.  For now though between the day job which I love and looking after my two older boys who keep me on my toes I keep it as a hobby.

I hope you like what you see and please feel free to share and leave comments as I look forward to meeting you all.

Post Pals

Post Pals is an amazing charity that puts smiles on very sick childrens faces.  This is a charity with a difference....

They ask people to become involved and volunteer to write to sick children all over the UK!

It takes 5 minutes!!!!  You can send a letter, a card a postcard and some cheery lines (but if your not sure what to put you will find a great list on their site - a guide to writing post, as these children are very ill and need cheery post)....buy a stamp, pop in the post box and hey presto...you know what????  You have just put a smile on a sick child's face.

Did it cost you much?   - NO
Did it take much of your time up? - NO
BUT!!!! - It did make a sick child smile and you know what????  Even mastercard couldnt achieve that but you did!!!!

Please take a look.  You can do it as little or as often as you like.  NO COMMITMENT WHATSOEVER!!!

I have been doing this a while now and have moved onto sending monthly projects, but you can do what you want to do.

Please take a look and see if you could take five minutes of your time to make a sick child smile - also please share.

5 minutes makes all the difference to these children who go through so much pain, there families go through so much too, knowing someone else out there cares too makes all the diifference.

So please, instead of buying that extra chocolate bar or coffe or whatever treat it may be this week how about buying a stamp instead?

And their smile will make you smile too.

Thank you for reading.

Song box....

Song box...

Home made song boxes are the best.  A selection of home made props mixed with a few items from around the home that represent various rhymes, add a shoe box and some music paper to cover it and hey presto you have your song box.

You can also add musical instruments too.  There are no limits to what you can add to enjoy a magical song time together.

Can you guess the rhymes from one of mine??????

A simple yet effective resource that develops language skills through songs and rhymes.

Have fun making yours!

Stacking boxes.....

Stacking boxes...

Stacking boxes, such a simple and effective resource that children just love.  There are many great stacking resources on the market today for children, however as mentioned previously about the philosophy regarding my work, I always look out for alternative ideas to use with the parents.

This fabulous selection of boxes can help childrens development in a variety of ways and were brought in a card shop - Simple gift boxes.  They are sturdy and hardwearing which is great for kids.

They build, find the correct corresponding lids, stack them inside each other....

If you set them out like this for the children to explore you can also add items inside each box for them to discover as they explore.......natural, noisy, hard, soft, rough, smooth...the list goes on.

Aims:

Helps to develop sequencing skills
Language development
Helps to develop size recognition

Have fun!

Eye spy bottle.....

Eye Spy Bottle.....

Part of my work is to develop early number skills through play too.  This simple resource is one I made to help develop just that.  There are many really great resources on the market that can be brought, however the philosophy regarding my role is to use items from around the home or that are easy to make so they are all easily accessible to the parents to make the resources with their children.

The aim of this resource is to find various items within the bottle - hence it's name the eye spy bottle.

You can stick to a theme or mix it up a little.  This one houses some coloured teddies, plastic tadpoles and pom poms to develop counting skills, colour recognition and language skills.

This one was filled with a combination of rice, sand and sequin stars to make it more interesting for the children to swish around and find the items.  For older children you can add a laminated list to the bottle.  They can cross off items with a white board marker pen as they find them.

These bottles are also brilliant for long trips to help keep boredom at bay.

Have fun!

Box of boxes......

Box of boxes:

We all know how much children love boxes.  A great simple resource for children to explore.  As you can see from the picture, this resource comprises of one large box, housing a number of small boxes.  The main box can be any shape as can the smaller boxes.  The children spend ages exploring and trying to find the correct lid for the corresponding box.

Aims:
  • To develop shape recognition
  • To develop early language skills (shape, size, open ended questions....)
  • To develop counting skills
You can add coloured boxes to develop colour recognition skills too.

Have fun!

Simple colour match game ......

A simple game to develop early colour matching skills.  All you need are some plain coloured plates and some fruit and vegetables.  Real fruit and vegetables are much better than plastic ones as they add a sensory experience to the game.  However for the object of the game, plastic ones are fine.

Aims:

To develop colour recognition skills
To develop language skills (developing vocabulary, asking simple open ended questions)
To develop counting skills
To explore textures if using real fruit
Go one further and follow on with a tasting game, or you could make a fruit salad.

Have fun!

Chocolate Play

Image from:
http://sweetlyscrappedart.blogspot.co.uk/p/vintage-valentines.html

Valentine's day is fast approaching.  If you want to try something different with your little ones, how about chocolate cards?

Mix powdered drinking chocolate with water to a smooth consistency and use to paint hearts onto valentines cards or just let them get stuck in and use their hands for prints.

The smell is divine and seriously stimulates the senses.

This can be done at any time not just for valentines. Add resources that children can use to print with or add cars and make the chocolate a little thicker for sensory mud!

Its brilliant, fun, cleans up easily and encourages great language skills as well as an opportunity for great sensory play for all ages.

Even the adults will find it hard not to lick their fingers!

Have fun and have a great Valentine's day.

Afasic Cymru ...

Afasic CymruAbout Afasic Cymru

Afasic Cymru supporting parents

Afasic is the UK charity established in 1968 as a parent led organisation representing children and young people with specific language impairment (SLI) and speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) by raising awareness of this often hidden disability thus working for their inclusion in society and supporting their parents and carers.
Afasic Cymru is not a service provider; therefore we can offer balanced impartial information. We provide information and training for parents – and professionals – and produce a range of publications. It works in partnership with local and national government, professional and statutory bodies and other voluntary organisations Members meet in local groups in both North and South Wales.
Afasic Cymru was established in Wales in 2002, in response to devolution and thanks to some funding from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG); the Waterloo Foundation and more recently The Big Lottery Fund. We are working from two regions - Jeannette Carr, Director along with Zein Pereira, Policy Officer are based in Cardiff and Yvonne Brookes the Development Officer who is based in North Wales.
In the current economic climate we are constantly seeking funding sources for us to continue our work in Wales, we would therefore be grateful if you could contact us if you know of any such opportunities or if your employer is looking to sponsor a charity of the month or year. All donations are gratefully received and used in Wales.
